Video Transcript
What’s going on Mike Hobbs here and in this video I want to talk about Descript and the difference between the classic editor and the new storyboard editor and I’m pretty sure if you’ve used the classic, you might be used to that. I know when I went first went to this new editor, I was like, Oh no, no, no.
I hate changes. I don’t like changes. I’m a pretty. Good with tech stuff and I know if I was confused other people are probably confused too So that’s the whole purpose of this video is just to kind of guide you on how the new storyboard editor works And the differences if you’re looking for certain features where they’re at when we’re going through this video so with that I’m just gonna share my screen and What I’m gonna show you is just the video that I did in the new editor So this is what the new storyboard editor looks like, and then here is one with the classic editor how this looks.
So, I’m not gonna show you how to record into them or upload into them, if you’re watching this video, you probably already know that, right? But what I’m gonna do is I’m just gonna show you where everything is at and the differences between them. So one of the things… is is different is the actual projects and they call it compositions projects.
You get this name all over the place. So when you’re actually in your editor, you’ll see that there’s the project section, right? A lot of people just create a whole bunch of different projects, which is fine.
And as you can see, I have a classic one and I have a regular one right here. And so. I’m going to go into the Classic Editor. Okay, and so this is what’s called the project, right? This is the overall project that you’re creating, okay? And then, what I’m going to do is, on the left hand side over here, This is where you click on the project and then it shows you all of what they call compositions.
So in the past I would just create a new video in one project, and I call it a composition, so new composition. And when I went to the new editor, so I was doing this consistently as you can see. So I have a whole bunch of different videos, and every time I do a new video I just click add new composition.
And then this is how I had accessed them and I just had like different videos. Right here, right? And so that’s how I was doing it before. It was working great. Had no problem with that, but then I got to the new editor and I get in here and I’m like, well, where’s the thing? I can’t find the composition.
Like, what am I doing? And I was just like clicking on everything and I’m like, where the heck is that? So, so in the new editor, I was looking for the compositions and I could not find it. For the life of me until I started messing around a little bit and then I found it.
So right here up here. This is your project name Okay, so you can rename that project settings project name and then to the right of it That’s where the compositions show up. So now I found it and I was like, yay Okay, so now. So right here I just click on the plus, and then that adds a new composition to the project.
So this is basically a new video to the project. And I can rename that video. So if I’m doing module number five for this course that I’m creating, then I would name that there. And then when I click on this little drop down next to the project name, now I see the different modules. So there’s module one, two, three, four, and now here’s five.
So that’s how you organize it a little bit better. And you can switch between them, so there’s Module 2, Module 3, Module 4, etc. And so, with the Classic Editor, it was over here on the left. And then you do the add new here and then you list them all over, over here on the left. So that was the first difference that was kind of annoying.
But now that I know where it’s at, it makes things a little bit easier for me to go through. Okay, so the next thing is the blade tool. So in the classic editor, when you’re going through… Your timeline here, and you come down here, you’ll notice that the blade tool just shows up right here, and then there’s select tool, blade tool, and then when you’re going through the material, you can just click on right here, and it cuts it, click on right there, it cuts it, you can right click and delete all that kind of stuff, that’s what I used to do, I just go through and cut out things obviously you could still highlight the words and delete those.
So that’s how the classic editor worked. So over here in the new editor, I was looking in the middle here and I couldn’t find it. And so what I found out is it’s over here on the right. So there’s the select, there’s the blade, so you still have that same option.
And then another thing. is when you come right here, it doesn’t really cut anything and you’re like, what, what’s going on? You actually have to go down to where the audio track is. So like in the classic, it was basically a lot bigger area that you can cut here. I had to like hover over the thing. So again, these are just little things that I had to figure out on my own and it still works the same way.
So you could still cut. and delete, right? So still works the same way, just in a different spot. And you have to scroll down to where the audio file is. Now, if you need this to be bigger, you can always. Drag it up like that. And then there’s a little bit bigger space to cut. So anyway, so that’s the blade tool The remove filler words, so that’s like a big feature of Descript that people love and so up in the classic editor What you would do to remove filler words is you would click up here on this little tool looking thing, right?
Is that a wrench? I don’t know. And then you would click on remove filler words and then it would just show you like right up here, the filler words, you can choose which ones you want to remove. And then you can just click on them and listen to it first. Buy this, buy this, buy that. And then you can either click.
Apply or ignore, right? So, and then go to the next one if you would like. So you can click the down arrow to go to the next one. If you don’t want to If you don’t want to delete it, you just go to the next, go to the next, go to the next and then click apply when you want it deleted. You can also replace it with just a gap right there.
So anyway, that’s the old editor in the new one. Again, I was a little confused on where this was at. I was like, Oh, there’s no wrench tool. I’m lost. Right. But then I just click over here on this little star. And there it is, right? So that’s where they moved it to. It’s right here under remove filler words and then it looks still, it looks a little bit different you have to just play around with it. But as you can see, if you click this, you can choose those same things. The one thing I really like about the new editor now that I’ve been getting used to it is it actually shows you how many times you said the things.
Okay. So you said like seven times, well, five times, right, four times. So, and then the ums and the ahs, it actually tells you how many times you said it. Now, I’ve already edited this file, so there’s none, because I’ve already done that, but I think that’s pretty cool. That’s one difference. that this other one didn’t do.
And then there’s also a different settings here and then there’s the arrows right there. So the arrows look a little bit different. The spot where you choose, you can select all or you can just select certain ones if you want to only show those. So that part is a little bit different, but then the arrows is also right here next to it.
So if you don’t want to delete this one, many different courses, you just click the next arrow. So it was kind of a, and then you just click remove. Okay, so you can just remove that one or remove all however you want to do it. Okay, so that is where you do the filler words. Okay, so the next one is in the old editor.
It was a little bit confusing on adding different scenes, right? So the new editor, they actually have a new feature that’s called scenes. So if you actually record inside of the editor. Let me show you what I mean by this. So like, for example, this little forward slash that creates a new scene. So let me show you an example of this.
So let’s say I wanted a new scene here. I would click forward slash and then from there. It is now a new scene and so if I change the webcam down here You’ll see that the webcam is full screen here But then on the new scene the webcam is down here in the corner So that’s if you’re recording a video and you have a webcam and your screen You know if you want to move one webcam down in the corner for the first half of the video and then the webcam in full screen on the next half of the video, you have to do a little forward slash that separates the clips, and then you can do the editing from there.
The splitting does not do that. So, just remember that. So if I go in here and I start cutting out this stuff, that doesn’t do it. Splitting the clip does not create a new scene. And then, so you actually have to do a forward slash to create a new scene. So if I wanted a new scene here, I do forward slash and then I can change the webcam back to full screen or zoomed in.
So if you wanted to do that, you know how some people they’ll do zoom here. And then they’ll zoom back, they’ll zoom back out here, you know, so I don’t know, you can mess around with it, but I’m just letting you know that those little forward slashes are what create new scenes. And it also allows you to do editing in a different way for that.
And just to make it a little bit different from the previous. Now I don’t even know how to do that in the classic editor, so, so I can’t tell you how to do that one over there. So that is an improvement with the new. Editor as you can see the different scenes right over here on the left So because I did those forward slash so you can actually go to those scenes right here on the left So that’s kind of a cool new Update with it.
Okay. So now here’s another big one is the playback speed Okay, so I was going in here with the classic editor and sometimes I like to listen to my video faster So if you click play There’s a little thing right here that says playback speed so you can listen to your video like two times Speed and then I was gonna click play Right,
so that was helpful because I can get through the video faster I can edit it faster and it made life easy I went into the new editor and I was like, there’s no speed controls. I’m in trouble So I couldn’t find it anywhere And nothing looked like speed controls, and then I finally clicked on this button right here, and voila!
There they are, so, so you just have to know where it’s at. But right here, it’s just a 2x and now I’ve got my speed controls back Okay, cool, so that is the new speed control the way that it works there is just playback speed is Where that’s at. So one other thing is the word level animations.
So where are those at? So over here in the classic editor You’ve got the, you have to click this plus button, and then you have to scroll through this and look for what’s called captions. So you had to do that, and then it would show the captions on the screen, right here. And so that’s how it used to work.
And then when you click on it, double click on the captions, it pulled up the… The sidebar over here where you would scroll down, click on fill, change the color of the text or whatever that you wanted. And then there was one right here that said word level animation. And that was your active word. So like, so as your, let me click play.
And as you can see, it just has that word level. When they opt into our email list. Now this advice is going to work for…
and then it would just have that word level animation across your whole video. And then you can of course change the colors. You can have backgrounds, you can do a lot of cool stuff. So that was the classic. So I went into the new editor and I couldn’t really find it again. So I was clicking on a whole bunch of things and and I eventually found it by clicking on Text right up here at the top.
So again, it’s in a different spot but as long as you know where it’s at you can do it. Click captions And as you can see, you’re good. And then over here on the right, it’s the same kind of thing. You just choose you know, the different effects that you want to do. The different animations you want to do.
The shadows. Custom. So you have to click custom. And then now that’s where the fill word is. That’s where the borders are. That’s where the active word. So basically it’s just in a different spot. It doesn’t it’s not the same Functionality like you have to like go into it and you have to click on this you have to go in here and then choose Your border choose your background, etc There’s the active word just like that.
So so it’s just in a different spot, but it’s still the same concept And you can still do the word level animations. And then the last thing is the record feature.
I actually couldn’t even figure out the record feature in here, so, so I was really confused in the classic editor on how to record a video. But now, in the new editor, there’s this record feature that you can do your camera and your screen at the same time. So right now I’m using a program called ScreenFlow to do this video but in Descript you can now do that.
You can either do just your camera, as you can see. It just pulls your camera open, or you can do screen and camera, and then choose your microphone, choose your display screen, and click record into script. So now this essentially does what ScreenFlow does so I could technically eliminate a tool. In fact, I’ve been using this lately, and I love it.
The only thing that, the only reason I’m using ScreenFlow for this particular video is because I have two Descripts open. So, bottom line is, it’s actually there. You can do your screen, you can do your audio, you can do this. And the benefit of recording it directly into Descript is now you can do this little scene thing I was telling you about to resize the webcam throughout the video, and then you have the whole transcript here that you can just cut words out, and it makes editing so much easier.
and you can do it right in one program and it just loads right into there. So I haven’t had any issues with it so far and it works great. So one other feature I wanted to just add to this video is the exporting. So, both of them are actually a little bit different. So in the classic editor, Typically, when you were done with the video, you’re ready to export it.
You would click on the share button and then you would choose export and then you would just click video or if you’re downloading the subtitles, you click subtitles. So you had to do that for each individual video. And then you, once you’ve done that then it would download to your computer and you’d be good.
And obviously you could do these other ones, but in the new one, one difference is it’s not sharing anymore. You actually click on publish, but also this is super important. If you do the export, it actually takes for ever. Okay. And I read this thing here and I was kind of like, what are they talking about?
And I actually went through that. And I realized that if you do this publish one and you click on this little download here, then save it to your computer from here, this goes way faster. They are not kidding when it says it’s 10 times faster. So if you use this one, it literally took forever to export.
And then when I click publish and I just click this download button, then all of a sudden it, it downloaded just as quick as the classic editor. So yes, the classic editor was way faster on the export tab than the new editor, but the workaround is just clicking this and then it will download super, super fast.
Anyway, that’s the video. That’s the comparison. I hope you got some value today.
