Are you using a system that provided autoresponder messages? Delete all your autoresponders!
Delete All Your Autoresponders!
If you have been in internet marketing for any time now, you know there are a ton of systems out there. The system may have given you an autoresponder code to fill into your GetResponse or Aweber. Some of those autoresponders have just five or six, maybe ten or twelve emails. I have had some up to 80 different emails in an autoresponder campaign.
I kid you not… I went through these autoresponders and they are all the same thing. It is a story or a call to action to go to the website and to buy.
Here is some advice that I want to give you guys on these autoresponders. I say, DELETE THEM ALL.
Some of you are saying, “What the heck? Delete all your autoresponders, Mike? What are you talking about?” and some of you are thinking, “Wow. That’s great! What a huge relief!”
Here is why. If I log into my GetResponse and select all my campaigns, you can see that all I have in my autoresponder is a first email that goes out.
I have made over a million dollars in commissions since I’ve been online. In my current company, I’ve made over $750,000. Obviously, this is not a guarantee that you will make money. My results are not typical. You can see our income disclosure here. The reason I mention the income is because I don’t have a bunch of autoresponders like everybody teaches you to do. Why don’t you want to do that? Here is why…
If you are in a system or promoting something that a lot of other people are promoting and everybody is using the same email sequence, here is what is going to happen:
Someone is going to opt into your list, they are going to opt into someone else’s list. They are going to start getting the same exact emails from both of you.
What does that look like to the prospect? The prospect now realizes that you are not really communicating with them. Those that are seasoned in the industry know that autoresponders are common and may expect that.
You don’t want to do what is expected. You don’t want to just send canned emails. All you are doing is sending them back to the sales page that way. It is not unique and it is not effective.
Today I heard my buddy, Mark Harbert say,
“The money is not in the list.
The money is in the relationship with your list.”
How are you supposed to build a relationship with your list if you are just pounding “get to my sales page,” “buy, buy, buy!” in every single email, especially when they aren’t personalized?
Delete All Your Autoresponders!
Here is what I do…
I have one email that goes out. This is the email that they opted in for. For example, if they opted into a page and I’m giving them a tip, then I will give them whatever I promised them in that first email.
What do I do from there? I send broadcast emails every single day. I am not automating this part. Why? Because I think you should be focusing on creating content every day.
You should be blogging every day and sending that blog to your email list. Or, you should be thinking of a story in your life that relates to the business that you are in, then write the story out and then link to your company.
Story type emails are great, blog posts are great. Webinar invites – if your company is doing a webinar, livecast or call or you are doing one, those are great to send to your list.
There are plenty of things that you can send to your list every day that will help you, that will brand you, that will build a relationship with your email list which will in turn, turn into money.
There is a way that you can beat what I am doing. I have, like I said, one email in there. Let me tell you how to beat me.
If you create a series of story type emails that are branded to you…
So, you are telling your story, something that your prospects can relate to, you can put that in your autoresponder. Maybe put that in your first week, maybe every other day, a story type of email from you, telling your story and why they should partner up with you.
People buy YOU. They don’t buy your business opportunity. They don’t buy your product. They are buying you! So, if you have some type of story emails that you can put in your autoresponder, I would highly recommend that. I just haven’t gone through and done it, but if you wanted to beat what I’m doing, I would definitely do that.
Another thing, if you wanted to add something in here, is Q&A. Some people on your list have questions! You can even send an email out asking what their top questions are. Then, when you get questions from prospects, shoot quick little videos or written emails and answer those questions in your words. This helps a lot.
Why did people get on your mailing list? Either they want to make money, so you are going to answer all their questions about your business to help them make a decision to join you.
The story emails will help people relate to you and want to partner with you.
If you are going to do autoresponders, I would do story type emails from YOU, not your upline’s story. If you are going to leverage your upline’s story, just do broadcast emails, don’t put them in your autoresponder.
Story type emails from you and Q&A, in the autoresponder and that is all I would ever do. Other than that, you want to send daily broadcasts of value or invites to your next live event.

What you say makes absolute sense, Mike. It's crazy to have the same thing going out from more than one person to the same audience. Personalize! Thanks for sharing this information and giving the detailed explanation as to why you say it.

Thanks for sharing your awesome value here Mike! What you mention here totally makes sense.
Great video Mike and I just did exactly this.
I can so relate. I did that with one of our products. They were sent to an auto responder from "the company". But I had communicated with them on skype. So they were totally confused. I think this has happened to most of us. I need to get better at sending prospects to MY capture page. Thanks for the reminder.
Hi Mike I believe putting content out there on a daily basis is one of the best things we could have done for our business. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mike, as always ton of value from you, I remember the first day i upload a campaign code into my autoresponder as soon I noticed that all emails were sending my prospect to the same pages, i got that bad feeling and I deleted it all. I love the idea of having a email sequence with your story, and branding yourself. but what do you do when you are on vacation your prospect do not receive any email from you? or you send broadcast when you are on vacation..
Thanks for keeping it simple Mike. A personal touch goes a long way. Like you quoted, "The money is in the relationship with your list."
Mike, thank you for the awesome tip. Always, giving us guidance and value. Thank you.
I agree 100% Mike… over the years I realized that there is more power in sending broadcasts and inviting people to connect with me versus just blasting them with email messages over and over again. I broadcast enough to keep people informed and provide value so they remember who I am. Great post!
It took me a long time to figure out that it wasn't the product people were buying. Thanks for sharing this great tip Mike.
Hey Mike….I am with you on deleting all messages from the autoresponder. Thanks for the great value.
Valuable Advice Mike!! This approach just makes so much sense when you realize that the primary thing that distinguishes you from the hundreds of other emails they get is your brand! That can be a hard thing for new marketer's to realize, but it is so important to our success! Thanks for all you do in sharing these valuable insights!!
Common sense prevails again! Thanks Mike
This is great advice. I think at first it's helpful to have some sort of framework to start with, but once you get in a groove and start learning and growing it's essential to share your value daily. If I had it to do all over, I would take this advice from the very beginning. For sure will take your advice from this day forward…
Super Great value, Mike. I like the idea of a sequence of "your-story" related to the business an place it into the autoresponder aside the daily dose of value. I have to say that when I saw the title I said to myself WHAAAAT????….your good at it! Thanks a lot for giving great info, Mike Hobbs!
Great insight Mike. I have been reading and watching your video posts lately because It's improving my own way of doing marketing. Thanks a lot for this tip.
Considering that I have configured my autoresponder incorrectly a couple of times, I welcome this advice! I have been emailing my list every time I blog so I will continue to do that! Thanks!
Consistency year after year every time I run across the content you are adding to the online community Mike Hobbs. Thank you!
Fantastic content Mike I am glad you gave us this information and I will follow this advice for sure
Mike, thank you so much for those valuable tips. Another thing that happens with canned autoresponder messages is that the links sometimes change and the message is worthless. Also the message changes because what you are promoting has changed. Just having that initial message as a video message help people relate to you more. You always provide such valuable content. As I have said before you are one incredible trainer and I appreciate all that you do!
This make a lot of sense Mike, and I have been wondering what someone on my list is thinking when he/she sees my 77th email, I will definitely look into this and bring more value to my list.
Exactly, Bill. I actually put in a fake email for one of my own autoresponder emails. Then I was would just ignore or delete the email when it came in. Until yesterday. I decided to test it out, and, sure enough, the links no longer worked. I have since deleted that autoresponder. And yes, Mike is one incredible trainer.
Great advice, Mike. I've been thinking about doing this for a while. Your video has given me the inspiration to go ahead. Wishing you continued success!
Mike, I did this recently. when I received as you said similair emails from other people that were the same in my autoresponder. And I was like, who will buy this? Well nobody will buy that! Thank you for the reminder!!
haha, ya! Well sending emails daily is not a bad thing… But its all about WHAT you send that matters!
Ya maybe I should get on top of it and create my own series right? haha
Ya I think it took a long time for a lot of us Steven!
Awesome! Glad you realized it soon!
Well its actually a great idea to send them pictures or videos from your vacation as you are doing it! Take a few minutes and people love to see that stuff! Another way to do it is schedule your broadcasts before you leave… Getresponse has a pretty easy way of scheduling them…
Awesome! Ya I used to use the long email series when I first started to… I just learned most my signups were coming from my broadcast emails and webinars… So that got me thinking… Why have the autoresponders that are not doing any good and probably lowering my open rate? haha
Ya that is what I realized. I got all my signups from broadcast emails and live webinars!
Couldn't agree more. Its not about the messages sent to the user. Its about the value sent to the user.
DELETE THEM ALL!!!
ya and when you do broadcast emails they also get your other email that day! They can be totally unrelated or different message and you don't even realize it!
ya no problem!
I'm glad you got value Alesha Drew!
Yes it does Chad! Thanks for stopping by!
Yes everyone is establishing their brand right from the beginning.. People will either know you or not know you! We decide!
Awesome! Keep it up! I emails my blog posts out every time i Do one! Great way to communicate with your list!
Thanks Jerry Giebeig!
This was great advice
I just started building my list and have struggled with thinking of what to put in a sequence , today I did a broadcast which had nothing to do with the product I am offering just something that I knew would be relevant to these folks
I will just find something like this everyday or so
Awesome, glad to help Wendell Bulbaai!
Ya it is so true! Just having a list will not do much good if none of them know who you are or who they are buying from!
Yes I agree Pedro Marques!
Thanks Fj Ortega!
Awesome Kimberly Shuman!
No Problem!
Nice! Way to take action Sue!
Perfect! Sometimes on the spot type of emails are the best anyway! They are right from your current inspiration!
Nice! Glad I could help!
O ya! Kill em All! o wait that was a movie… haha
So true! Thanks for sharing Bill Winch!
Great advice! It's all about being unique and effective and building a personal relationship. Thanks.
Great tip Mike! This makes complete sense because your response using a broadcast message is in real time as opposed to some old auto-responder message done a year or two ago.
Exactly!
You got it!
Hi Mike
Thank you for this, I think I personal ruined my list on this. Getting them get up in all those same emails angain and again. I did personlaize them combined to the Default ones. I'm new to this and was putting my self in same situation with my list. thank you so much for this.. Want to do it right. With care charlotte
Thanks mike,i will look into it.
I can see the power in this Mike. Thanks for sharing. I have a couple of lists that I do that with.
Mike, Thanks. I never skip one of your emails as you always have something that I can use and learn from. I understand the why behind this strategy but confused on how to go about it. Do I delete all campaigns in my auto responder and copy my leads into a campaign that I have control over what is sent out? Clarification on what exactly I need to do would be helpful.
No leave your campaigns alone… Just go where you have the autoresponder messages… Delete all but the first one that goes out… You may edit the first one to be a little more personal as well… Put your Facebook link in for example for a way to connect with you…
Fantastic tips on how to communicate with your list Mike. Deleting all your auto responder messages and sending out broadcast emails branded to you and your story is a wonderful idea. You consistently share so much value and we deeply appreciate all you do to help others have success. Thank you.
Always great value Mike and I have been seeing some good results since sharing my story in the emails, using more broadcast emails rather than autoresponders. Personalization is key to building that connection. Thank you for sharing!
The first thing I did yesterday and all night was take Mike Hobbs advice and go through all my lists and clean everything up…you were so right Mike this post is spot on, and if anyone is building a list and using the same messages as everyone else, its really not going to make you stick out as someone to join. Thanks for sharing some value Mike, I appreciate all your hard work pal. Great post today.
Great video Mike, sure keeps the messages fresh to the prospects doesn't it.
