How to Set Up a Facebook Page for Internet Marketing

I had some people that were asking me some questions about Fan Pages.  They just have a personal profile and don’t have a Fan Page set up.  I wanted to share some tips on what I would do if I were setting up a Fan Page / Business Page from scratch.

You can search Google or YouTube for how to set up a Facebook Page.  These are my pointers on how to set up a Facebook Page for Internet Marketing.

FYI:  this is not actually called a ‘Fan Page’ anymore.  It is just a ‘Page.’  You may also hear it called a ‘Like Page,’ or ‘Business Page.’  It is meant for your business.

This is actually Facebook’s way of telling you, “Hey, this is where you promote your business!”  Facebook is trying to get away from having people promote their businesses on the personal profile.  If you have a business and are building it on the internet, a Page is where Facebook wants you to build it.

Here is the first step…

Go to your Facebook Profile and log in.  On the top right corner, there it a little arrow.  Select “Create a Page” from the dropdown menu.

This is where people get stuck.  They don’t know what category to choose.  I suggest “Artist, Band or Public Figure” because you are branding yourself.  If you have an actual brick and mortar organization, you may want to choose “Company, Organization or Institution.”  (You can change this later, by the way.)

Within the “Artist, Band or Public Figure” category, you will choose a subcategory.  “Business Person,” “Public Figure,” or “Entrepreneur” work well for Internet Marketers.

Also inside the “Artist, Band or Public Figure” category, you will choose the name of your Page.  For years I had a crazy, long name because I was trying to use keywords.  When all is said and done, you are branding yourself, so I changed my name.  You can change the name of your Page only one time.  So if you choose a wrong name when you first create your Page, you have one time to correct it.  You can do what you want here, but my suggestion is to use your name.

Click on “Get Started” and follow the steps.

Here are some basic tips on how to set up a Facebook Page for Internet Marketing…

About

In the “About” section, I like to use a slogan.  My slogan is “I help internet marketers generate more leads, produce more sales and make more money in their business.”  Speak to your target market and tell them a little bit about yourself.  (You can change all of this later.)

Include your website.  If you have a blog or lead capture page with something that gives value, I suggest you list that as your website.

Choose a unique web address for your Page.  This is really important because you will be sharing this address all the time!

Profile Picture

This is self-explanatory.  Sometimes when people ask me how to do this, it is crazy because they can literally walk step by step and Facebook tells you how to do this.

Add to Favorites

I always ‘Add to Favorites’ because this puts the Page on your left sidebar when you are on your home page for easy access.

Reach More People

Skip this section for now.   This is placing an ad and is a part of a different training.

Now your page is set up!  The last thing you really need is a cover for the top of your Page.  Here is my suggestion:  Choose a lifestyle photo.  I have a photo of me on a boat.  Drag to reposition the photo and save changes.  You could also pay someone to do a cool graphic.

That is how to set up a Facebook Page for Internet Marketing.  Simple!  Now I will suggest some specific settings…

The ‘Settings’ tab is located at the top of the Page.

Page Visibility – This should say ‘Page Published.’  If the box is checked under the ‘Edit’ feature, then no one will be able to see the Page.

Posting Ability – ‘Disable posts by other people on my Page timeline.’  The reason I did this is because I want people to interact with my posts on my timeline with comments.  This is what is most effective.  I don’t want people creating a post on my timeline.

Messages – I allowed messages.  It is good to get messages because sometimes you may have a full profile and people can’t send you messages there.  This way, they can send you a message via your Page.

Post Attribution – I choose the second option and post as myself as default.

Notifications – You may choose what notifications to receive.  I like getting a notification when there is a new message.  I choose not to get email notifications.

Make your Page and posts ‘Public.’  Don’t hide anything.  Here is my last tip on how to set up a Facebook Page for Internet Marketing:  If you are worried about privacy when building an internet marketing business, then you need to go into a different industry.  Become a cop, go into the military or FBI.  Internet Marketing is not for you if you are worried about your privacy on the Internet.  Being private as an Internet Marketer means no money.
