Hyperlink Domain Blacklist is Tip #5 of 5 in the Email Deliverability Series…
Hyperlink Domain Blacklist
This final tip in my email deliverability series, Hyperlink Domain Blacklist, is going to blow you away. I was really shocked and had never really thought about this in the way that I am going to be sharing with you.
A lot of people will just write an email, and then they will say “Go here to find out more” and they will include their website, like http://www.retirewithhobbs.com. They will highlight the website and hyperlink it. It looks great – at least I thought this was okay.
Now, let me explain what spammers do.
A spammer will send out an email that says, “Log in to your account, here: http://www.paypal.com,” then they will hyperlink the domain and it will actually go to http://www.spam-email-that-is-going-to-steal-your-info.com. So then, when people open the email they think it is legitimate but when they click on the domain link, it takes them to a completely different website.
So, here is what happens with your email and you don’t even know this is happening…
Do you notice when you hover over the links? Use “copy link location.” The link is going to a big long url created for tracking purposes. People want to know how many people are opening their email and they want to know how many people are clicking the links in the email, so your email service provider puts these tracking links in there. Little did you know that this could be affecting your deliverability.
Let’s say you put the domain name http://www.retirewithhobbs.com in your email, but when you click on the hyperlink it takes you to a big long Aweber link. When the Internet Service Provider (ISP) sees that the link is supposed to go to http://www.retirewithhobbs.com, but the hyperlink is linking to a big long tracking URL that has nothing to do with the domain – it looks shady! The ISP sends the email to the spam folder due to the hyperlink domain blacklist.
Hyperlink Domain Blacklist – Email Deliverability Tip 5 of 5
The trick to get past this is, do not use the domain name in the email. Use hypertext instead, like “Meet me here to hangout.” Highlight that text and hyperlink it to the website domain.
This will make your links look cooler, and it will protect you from looking like a spammer and ending up with a hyperlink domain blacklist with a pass directly to the spam box.
This is something that I overlooked. I always put my domain name in my email. I have done it for years. When I found out about the hyperlink domain blacklist, it blew my mind. I couldn't believe that after being in internet marketing for five years that I didn't know about it!
