Proper HTML Coding is Tip #4 of 5 in the Email Deliverability Series…
Proper HTML Coding
This is a pretty basic tip, but I have to share it because it really does affect your inbox delivery a lot.
Do not write your emails in a Word document and then paste it over into your email.
When you copy and paste from Word, you can’t tell that there is anything wrong, but there is something in Word that has a little bit different coding than the html editors in our email providers. Word just really messes up the code. It may look normal, but some reason special characters get changed and something goes wrong during the copy and paste. This actually affects your email deliverability.
Here is the way to do proper HTML coding: use notepad on PC or text edit document on MAC – something that doesn’t have any special formatting. Or, just write the email inside the editor itself and use the coding based on your email service provider.

Also, don’t go crazy with a lot of different colors and different sized fonts. It is okay to use a little highlight, but write an email like you are a normal person. The ISP is looking for realness. If it looks like spam to you, it isn’t going to make it into the inbox and it’s going to be your fault, not your email provider’s fault.
Don’t use super spammy words like “Viagra.” If you think it looks like spam, then it probably looks like spam to the internet service providers. Don’t do crazy bolds, underlines, different sized fonts and texts. Use proper HTML coding by making the email look normal and you are going to get better deliverability.
