Are you seeking counsel over opinion?
I had the privilege this morning to hear from Greg Reid who is a bestselling author, speaker and trainer around the world. He has been known as “The Napoleon Hill of This Day,” and is a part of the Napoleon Hill foundation.
Greg Reid was talking about an interview that he was doing with someone else, and one of the success principles that came out was – seeking counsel over opinion, and knowing the difference.
Seeking Counsel Over Opinion
Let’s say you go to a doctor and tell him you are trying to write a book and ask him if he has any advice for you. The doctor may tell you that writing a book is not worth your time and that you shouldn’t do it.
The doctor gave you his opinion.
What if you went to a successful author like Mark Victor Hansen and told him you are writing a book and asked, “Do you have any advice for me?”
Now, whatever the author tells you is worthwhile counsel because he has successfully written a book.
Do you see the difference in seeking counsel over opinion?
Seeking Counsel Over Opinion in Business
In the home based business industry, many people go to their friends and family as ask for advice. Often what is said is, “That is just another pyramid scheme. You aren’t going to be successful. 98% of people fail in those things. Don’t do it!”
Well, that is their opinion.
Opinions will keep you from hitting your goals. If you seek counsel from people that just give you their opinion, you are not going to make it.
What is the correct way of seeking counsel over opinion?
You need to go to someone that has been successful in the home based business industry.
If you are interested in working successfully from home, the only counsel you should ever take, should come from people that work from home successfully. Those that have done it can provide worthwhile wisdom and counsel.
When you go to someone that has never done it, it is just an opinion.
You can get through those hurtles and road bumps when faced with negativity if you always keep in mind:
Are they giving me their opinion, or are they giving me worthwhile wisdom and counsel?
When you understand the difference between counsel and opinion, you can be successful in this industry.
Seeking Counsel Over Opinion in Business Reviews
I have seen people do a company review and say, “This is an unbiased review.” Next, the reviewer provides a negative opinion of the company. The reviewer is not successful in that company. The reviewer is not the person go to for worthwhile wisdom or counsel.
You have to go to someone within the company…
Then people say, “Well, I don’t want to ask someone within the company, because they are just going to tell me how wonderful it is.”
Here is the truth…
If you ever want to seek worthwhile wisdom and counsel from someone, you should only listen to people that are successful in that company or industry.
If you go to anyone else, it is just an opinion.
